Lambda Delta History
In March of 1976, shortly after Kappa Rho Omega graduate chapter was
chartered in Farmville, VA, the process began to sponsor/charter an
undergraduate chapter. Repeated meetings were set up to gain permission to
charter a chapter on Longwood's campus, and several times it was denied.
Administration saw no need for a "Black sorority". Kappa Rho Omega members and
interested undergraduates had to even prove to the administration that AKA was
a legitimate organization and not made up. Finally, the college gave in and on
February 19, 1977 the Spirit of AKA took over the campus of Longwood
University. The Legendary Lambda Delta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
Inc. was chartered, making it the first historically African-American
organization to set foot on Longwood's campus.
Since its chartering, Lambda Delta has devoted over 30 years to carrying
out its national body’s purpose and efforts. Having seen over 100 members
come through the chapter, holding one of the highest sorority GPAS and
excelling in service hours, Lambda Delta has been and continues to be a vital
part of the Longwood community.
